Trance is alive!! And WOW, did Insomniac’s Dreamstate San Francisco deliver — bringing us musical goods loved from all around the world! The cloud of melodic harmonies coasted and floated all through San Francisco’s Bill Graham Auditorium, and this time lifted us all with a little extra heart bumping from Psytrance’s hottest!

This year’s buzz was more than just the lineup.  Dreamstate veterans (especially for the 2nd edition at the Bill Graham) could not contain their excitement to return to that magnetic LED screen of dreams. The venue’s best gift of all, was the chance to enjoy each and every set! Unlike other festivals where the gut wrenching choice of picking between the DJ’S who give you the deepest feels and the ones that make you rethink life, DreamstateSF was different – no choosing, not this time! This time was all about the feels.  All the spectacular light shows and the jaw dropping reverse bass kicks trance has to offer – one set at a time!

Each night, Dreamstate kicked off with some heavy hitting openers like Binary Finary, and ASOT’s regular, Ruben De Ronde. I know I wasn’t the only attendee getting to the gates when those concert doors opened!  Before I get into the favorites and hottest sounds, let’s take a moment to appreciate the production of DreamstateSF.

Insomniac delivered laser slicing, LED blazing, confetti shooting, and so much more, all on the concert stage.  The experience was electric from the floor to the balcony, and every floor in between! If you were lucky enough to claim a spot on the center of the floor, your face would melt from the warmth of that glowing LED screen, while up above, the robotic lights gave a light show of their own. To top it off, blasts of air and confetti fired at just the right moments, teasing the crowd leaving them begging for more. Imagine falling into that trance with the sounds of PureNRG filling the auditorium as you enjoyed the show.

If you are the festival wanderer like I am, you chose to not only dance the night away on the floor but also set out to journey to the balcony. One of the best discoveries up top was to find out that the screen and the dancing chandelier was not only for the floor crowd, but that each choreographed motion was synchronized with the stage and screen production as well!! Check out the amazing shots we were able to get! The pictures definitely don’t do the production justice, being there for that musically drenched visual experience was magical.

The stage was set and the crowd was lit. Anyone who has been to a Dreamstate stage in the past year has sensed the momentum building in the music.  I first felt it at last year’s DreamstateSF and it was confirmed at the NOS center for the SoCal edition when I found myself in the thick of the crowd squeezing through the crowd trying to fit in at the stage to chase the fastest bpm I could find.  And the only place where melodic, yet hypersonic bpm (outside of hardstyle) gets everyone addicted is psytrance. From the softest sneakiest bass beats from the likes of Psy’s hottest, Ben Nicky, along with heavy hitters like Astrix, Vini Vici, and Liquid Ace who made their 1st US debut. If you weren’t blown away by the swarming shuffle circles, the soft trance sway, or the light shows, you didn’t experience the Dreamstate that I did. The whole experience was out of this world; I guess that’s why some call it the state of dreams.
