Chris Giuliano’s latest release on Anjunabeats, ‘Off The Wall’, was both an artistic challenge that surprised Chris himself as well as his listeners. During the latest session of Open Door Sessions Mastermind, it was so insightful and inspiring to hear about his philosophies that drive him in music production and about the leap of faith he took to send this track off for release.
Chris is an LA native producer and DJ who has landed releases on prestigious labels like Anjunabeats, Elliptical Sun, Armada, and Enhanced Music. He grew up engraved in music and culture. As a kid, he started playing the guitar and remembers being very fascinated with something as simple as teaching himself scales repetitively growing up. In this, he learned the value of playing with an instrument as an artist to help train his ear and become accustomed to different musical scales. Living in the big city of LA also made it natural for Chris to grow up regularly attending shows and events and being constantly surrounded by musical culture.
Chris’s path truly started when he was just about 16 or 17 years old when a friend of his from Sweden had introduced him to trance. At that point, he had seen Tiesto for the first time and shortly after started making his own music. To start, he assured all of us that everything sounded absolutely horrible in the beginning – and that should be expected. He spent much of the time starting music production by messing with synths, creating his own sounds, and truly understanding what it means to design sound. Chris states that you can truly open yourself up to creativity when you limit using samples for the main part of your music, such as chord progressions and basslines. That way, you can learn how to create it yourself and make it very unique.
After years of finding his sound and persistently practicing, Chris quickly started getting support from prestigious radio shows like A State of Trance and Group Therapy. This all eventually led to a huge highlight of his career in releasing with Anjunabeats along with his most recent milestone in becoming the next in The Anujnabeats Rising Residency. He doesn’t plan to stop here, as his goals continue to grow alongside his career. He hopes to continue building the relationship with Anjunabeats and pursue even bigger goals in his future.
‘Off The Wall’ was Chris’s latest release on Anjunabeats, out just recently on November 10th. He made this track during the pandemic and wanted to try making something “weird” or “unusual” to match the lack of normalcy happening in the world. When it was finished, he said he almost didn’t send it out because there were enough people that expressed doubt that it would be signed. But eventually, he decided that he would do it because the worst that can happen is that it would just be rejected. To his surprise, when he sent the track out to Anjunabeats, not only did he make the release, but it was also played out during the Above & Beyond: Group Therapy 450 live in London.
Throughout Chris’s musical journey, he learned some valuable philosophies that he shared with us to help smaller artists like myself pursue a more authentic path. The two biggest points he made in the mastermind was to never stop taking the opportunity to experiment and learn, and always embrace being unique and true to yourself. For instance, as an upcoming artist a common question you may wonder is how do you decide what you want your sound to be and if it should be tailored to a label’s sound. In Chris’s perspective, his sound is always evolving. But when he looks back at his music, the sound changes in a cohesive way. He states, if you have a dream label, you can tailor your sound to that label as long as you always keep an essence that is true to yourself.
