Neon Owl Interview with DJ and Producer TUJAMO. TUJAMO’s style is energetic and unique. You won’t stop dancing when you listen to his music! We sit down to get to know him a little better: what Tujamo means, his passion, his vision, and what he could eat all day long!

Where did the name Tujamo come from?

Tujamo started with my best friend back in the days and we were looking for a unique word as an artist name.

You got started with DJ’ing after winning a talent competition right?

At 15 I started DJ’ing, as a hobby. My girlfriend back in the day pushed me. I never wanted to play in clubs and told my friends this. All my friends loved my mix tapes, and so my GF signed me to a DJ contest. It was on a Friday night, and she said we need to go two hours to get to the club and play for this DJ contest. I was like, “No!” I went though, and I won, from that it started!

You became well known because of your unique sound? How do you make sure you keep getting better and better?

A lot of studio time. Try new things. Make sure it’s the Tujamo style.

Favorite track you’ve made?

All of them mean something to me. I spend so much time making them.

Genre that you draw inspiration from?

Hip Hop, I listen to lots of different types of music though, even Pop, people ask what’s wrong with you? (laughs)

Advice for someone who wants to follow in your footsteps?

Find something of your own, don’t copy someone else. There’s already a Hardwell, an Armin, a Diplo. Everyone makes the same sh*t that made them famous. Take risks, do whatever you want, make it unique. It’s hard to do, since there’s so much out there, but that’s the most important thing. Keep focusing on producing music, and not on playing a lot. One song can change your whole life.

Highlight of your career?

Being able to play all the big festivals. I love music, and being able to see all these places in the world.

Has any of your family been able to see you?

Not yet, but hopefully my mom can come soon!

What else in store for you?

Working on lot of new music right now. Working on more vocal based songs. Try to push the boundaries. Mix different genres, not sure yet, but we will see. Playing and touring a lot.

When you’re ready to go on stage, what’s going on in your mind?

Mix of being nervous, in a good way, excited and basically looking forward to it.

You always give so much energy to the crowd.  I am always the crazy dancing one in the middle..

Tujamo interrupts: I better see it!

MissJade: You will!! (laughs) Is that what you want the crowd to feel?

I like to listen to the DJ before me. Watching the crowd and finding what they like. Mix of what I like and what they like.

Let’s get more personal…

Describe yourself in one word:

Tall. That’s the first thing people say. They don’t say hi. No, they say wow, you are tall.

How tall are you?

2 meters (6’ 6”)

If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be doing:

Working with disabled people. I did that for 9 months in Germany. You have to choose between something social or going into army. I worked in villages with disabled people. I fell in love with this job, so I would do something social.

Nickname:

Matze (German thing), all Matthias are Matze

You can only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Sushi

MissJade: Yea I see all your snaps. (laughs)

House is on fire, first thing you grab:

Laptop

What are you doing when not DJing?

I’m a workaholic. Also eating sushi.

When you’re ready to hang up the DJ hat, what legacy you want to leave behind?

Good music. Quality parties. Fun times. Hangovers.

What do you want to say to your fans watching?

Thank you for everything. Thanks for taking this journey with me, and hope to see you all soon.
