Where do we begin with this one?! I had briefly heard of Trivecta’s name and his music before sailing away on this past Groove Cruise, but I wasn’t a hardcore fan or anything (I know, it’s a crime). My internet was spotty at best, and I was really hoping I’d remember what he looked like when grabbing him before our interview so that he wouldn’t get lost on his way to this super secret location. I waited in the arcade (yes, there’s an arcade on board Groove Cruise and it’s epic), and soon saw this shirtless, bearded dude with glasses and flip flops making his way over with a drink in his hand. I cracked up from the inside out, seeing how Sam was so well dressed for the occasion. Sam asked us if he needed to put a shirt on, and I told him it would be a wise idea. So sorry ladies and gents for making Sam put his shirt back on.

During our talk, we went anywhere and everywhere. Sam took us back to the start from how he got started in music and his obsessive personality of often getting so deep into things, even beyond its cool phase. This intensity and commitment probably explains a portion of why Sam has become the incredible musician, artist and creative he is today. We talked about his transition from teaching students music, to the nerve racking jump of diving all in with his artist project. We even found out that Sam wasn’t into EDM originally. We learned that he’s a workaholic and that he has anxiety whenever he isn’t able to produce for more than a couple of days. He feared cruises, and even debated on not coming aboard Groove Cruise! Let’s be honest, I think our experience would have been a lot more dull if he really decided to not jump on board.

Sam, along with the rest of the Born and Ophelia crew hosted a pub crawl on Friday night, which was an epic time that kicked off an incredible experience for the rest of the weekend. He (along with Haliene) are pros at flossing and made a few attempts to teach my uncoordinated self. He also did a hot wings challenge on Sunday which set his mouth, and probably other parts, on fire. Jason Beukema (founder of Groove Cruise) joined Sam and many others for this challenge, and it almost made him evaporate. Despite the solid effort from Jason and Sam, first time cruiser Braxton consumed the most amount of heat in the quickest amount of time, therefore taking the trophy home. We also had an epic battle of bao zheen dop (rock paper scissors), where Sam lost, time and time again, but refused to believe that he was defeated. Lastly, we can also confirm that Sam sucks at hair braiding.

Despite his not so great track record of winning in any of the cruise festivities on board, we can confirm that Sam is always, without a doubt, winning in his art of production – leaving it all behind on the decks, as well as lighting up our hearts and the sky as the magical human that he is. He played a total of 4 sets onboard. The first set was an impromptu B2B2B with MitiS and Amidy at the Casino on Friday, which popped off like no other. I kid you not, there were inflatable railings and hardcore headbanging involved. We went from an empty casino, to an all-out crowd shaking the floor (bartenders and dealers included). The second set was at the BORN stage after MitiS on Saturday night, where Sam took us on an incredible journey. He played many of his classics and new works, and we had a blast railing it with Rico & Miella and Amidy front and center. It was my first time ever seeing Sam perform, and I must say, he had me standing at the edge of every single moment. The way that he took us through the emotional dives and energy highs, kept us both dancing on our toes and drifting away in a sea of emotions. Having been on many Groove Cruises up to date, Trivecta had definitely been one of my favorite performers throughout any cruise.

Finally, he closed off with two more epic sets on Sunday before wrapping up Groove Cruise. One was an epic psytrance set, which most people weren’t expecting, and the final impromptu overtime set as a B2B2B w/ MitiS and Amidy, because no one wanted the party to end (security guard included). That last night was so magical, filled with our amazing new friends and incredible sets from Rico & Miella, Amidy, Mitis, to Trivecta that I had to take a moment to step away for a breath of oxygen while I soaked in my gratitude.

In case you don’t comprehend yet, now you know that although I may not have known of this Trivecta guy very well prior to the cruise, I have definitely been converted into both a friend and a loyal fan. Talent and fun aside, he has been one of the kindest and most humble humans we have met here at Neon Owl.

Watch the full interview to learn more about how Markus Schulz and Clozee’s mind blowing sets made Sam reevaluate life. You can also hear from his own words what Seven Lions, the Ophelia family, and this entire melodic bass movement has meant to Sam. You can also find out who he would rather bring with him to a deserted island: Kill the Noise or Wooli

Currently, we’re celebrating Trivecta’s first headlining tour kicking off next month! Make sure you grab your tickets now and we’ll get lost together front and center!

BONUS ROUND: We did a fun catch up via ZOOM a few weeks after Groove Cruise and played a game of THIS OR THAT! You’re not going to want to miss this for some extra giggles.

DOUBLE BONUS ROUND

Despite Sam’s efforts to eat clean and exercise, we found out that he likes POP TARTS (ewww). So we had him do a little taste test of hot sauce + pop tarts at the Ophelia Showcase during Miami Music Week.
