Shortly after his Dreamstate set, we got the chance to chat with Somna, one of Canada’s leading Trance artists. Known for fusing together traditional mixing with current technologies, he creates music that takes fans on a journey, which we dove deeper into when discussing his most recent album, ‘Satellites.’

From his beautiful, uplifting track ‘Warrior’ with Emma Hewitt, to his darker, techno infused sounds featured in ‘The Woo,’ the album features tracks that individually have their own unique vibe, while collectively maintaining his own sound. The inspiration for the album, much like Somna’s calm demeanor, is very sweet: it was essentially a “love letter to his fans” that supported him while he was streaming during the pandemic, which felt like they were “beaming to each other like satellites” while everyone was stuck at home.

It was refreshing to hear about his own personal journey to get to where he is currently as a producer and DJ. From violin as a kid in orchestra, then later moving on to trombone, drums, guitar, and eventually a rock band, music eventually led him to producing Hard Dance during the pre-Somna days.

While his goal was to eventually end up on stage doing what he currently gets to do, he actually defines “making it” as “when people support you and really care…and are excited to interact with you.” Hearing his appreciation and love for his fans, and how they feel like a community and family to him, is a true testament to Somna’s genuine personality.

The conversation wasn’t all serious, though! We geeked out on producer-speak, learning where he started with his production, and what tools he likes to employ now when making music. And of course, a Neon Owl interview wouldn’t be complete without a few fun, random questions, where we learned some interesting facts about Somna, namely that his favorite fast food chain is Arby’s.
